Project Details

The Objective

The Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR) at the University of Victoria runs KnowAlcohol.ca – a public health platform built around an interactive calculator that helps Canadians understand how alcohol affects their health, their wallet, and their daily life.

When CISUR wanted to bring that calculator to a wider audience, they needed more than static assets. Complex health data and personal risk metrics don’t communicate well through text alone. They needed a professional animated explainer video production that would engage people to watch, understand, and ultimately use the KnowAlcohol calculator to find out how they can reduce health risks and save.

VCM Interactive was engaged to develop and produce the full video campaign. From concept and script development through to a bilingual, multi-format suite of video assets ready for YouTube, Google Ads, social media, and the web.

The campaign was designed to:

  • Improve public understanding of alcohol’s impact on health, costs, and calories
  • Drive traffic to the Know Alcohol Calculator tool
  • Reach new audiences – particularly younger Canadians and male viewers
  • Support digital outreach across English and French Canada
  • Generate performance data that could inform future campaigns

The Challenge

Public health communication faces a fundamental problem: the audiences who most need to engage with health research are often the hardest to reach through traditional content. For CISUR, three specific gaps needed to be addressed:

  • Low engagement from younger viewers – particularly the 18–34 age group the KnowAlcohol platform most wanted to reach
  • Limited reach among male audiences, a key demographic that had not been effectively engaged through previous digital efforts
  • The need to communicate complex, data-driven content – calorie counts, cost projections, health risk metrics – in a way that was clear, credible, and compelling

On top of that, the campaign needed to work across two languages and multiple platforms – requiring a production approach flexible enough to serve a bilingual Canadian audience without sacrificing quality or consistency.

The Solution – Animated Explainer Video Production Strategy

CISUR’s Know Alcohol Calculator already existed as a fully developed interactive web tool, complete with its own visual design and brand identity. VCM Interactive’s task was to translate that digital experience into an animated explainer video – taking something users navigate at their own pace and turning it into a clear, compelling linear story that worked in 15, 25, and 45 seconds.

VCM Interactive developed a structured multi-format video package designed for performance, not just presentation. Every production decision was made with distribution, testing, and audience reach in mind.

Visual Narrative & Animation

Working within CISUR’s existing graphic design framework, VCM Interactive built on their established visual identity to develop animated sequences that were in tune with the KnowAlcohol brand, translating the calculator’s key outputs into motion without losing the look and feel their audience already recognized.

  • Animated breakdowns of health impact data
  • Visual cost-saving comparisons across drinking levels
  • Data-driven calorie consumption visualizations
  • Clear presentation of the benefits of reducing alcohol intake

By combining animation, motion graphics, data visualization, and strategic storytelling, the videos aligned directly with the interactive calculator experience, giving viewers a reason to visit the tool and explore their own numbers.

Multi-Language Production

All videos were produced in English and French versions, ensuring the campaign could reach audiences across Canada without compromise. Bilingual production was built into the workflow from day one, not added as an afterthought.

Video Length Variations

Three lengths were produced to match different placement requirements and audience behaviours:

  • 45-second primary version – for deeper engagement and platform pages
  • 25-second short version – for pre-roll and mid-funnel placements
  • 15-second ultra-short version – for high-frequency awareness and social media

Format Adaptation

  • 16:9 horizontal versions – for web, YouTube, and broadcast
  • 9:16 vertical versions – for social media and mobile distribution

A/B Voiceover Testing

Both male and female voiceover versions were produced for each video, giving CISUR the ability to test audience response and optimize based on real engagement data. This proved to be one of the most valuable parts of the campaign.

The Results

The campaign was deployed through YouTube Ads and the Google Ads video network, with demographic targeting focused on age, gender, and viewer behaviour. The results exceeded expectations across every key metric.

Audience insights and campaign performance infographic

Total Reach

  • English campaign: 776,688 views and 1,232+ hours of watch time
  • French campaign: 58,388 views and 27+ hours of watch time
  • Combined total: over 835,000 views across both languages

Over 835,000 views were delivered across English and French Canada, the result of strong creative paired with disciplined targeting and continuous in-campaign optimization.

Younger Audiences Engaged

The 25–34 age group drove the highest impressions and clicks of any demographic, followed closely by the 18–24 group. Reaching these audiences was a primary campaign objective, and the data confirmed the strategy worked.

Male Audiences Engaged

Male viewers significantly outperformed female viewers in click volume, which was a goal for the campaign. CISUR was able to determine which of the video assets resonated best with this audience and tailor media buys to ensure male audiences were shown this asset

Short-Form Video Dominated

The 15–16 second costs and calories video was the single highest-performing asset in the campaign, generating over 204,000 views in English alone.

Short-form consistently outperformed longer videos on completion rate and engagement. A finding that directly shapes how future campaigns should be structured.

Creative Intelligence Generated

  • Female voiceover drove higher engagement rates across the campaign
  • Short-form video (under 20 seconds) significantly outperformed longer content on paid platforms
  • Health and lifestyle messaging costs and calories resonated more strongly than feature-focused content
  • Bilingual production unlocked audience reach a single-language approach would have missed entirely

These insights don’t just explain what happened in this campaign; they make every future campaign smarter.

Why Animated Explainer Video Production Works for Public Health

For research institutions and public health organizations, the gap between what the data shows and what the public understands is a real problem. Animated explainer video production bridges that gap.

Done well, animation can:

  • Translate complex research findings into clear, accessible visuals
  • Make interactive digital tools easier to understand and more compelling to use
  • Achieve higher completion and engagement rates than static or text-based content
  • Scale across platforms web, social media, digital advertising from a single production
  • Reach audiences in multiple languages without duplicating the full creative process

This project is a concrete example of how animation can close the distance between academic research and everyday understanding, helping real people make more informed decisions about their health.

Client Testimonial:

The ad campaign achieved our goals. The videos did really well with younger, male audiences, which was a market we hadn’t tapped into. The shorter costs and calories video was the most popular by far. The female voice seemed to resonate more than the others. We’ll be able to get even more value from the assets because we’re putting together another campaign with the hopes of reaching rural/remote audiences with a similar demographic (men 25-55). Thank you, VCM!
